Big idea: Feedback improves learning when students predict first, observe a pattern, change one variable, and then remove the support.
Success criteria:

Launch: tool or crutch? (6 minutes)
Ask students to respond to this claim:
“If the screen says the right note, the performance is correct.”
Collect reasons to agree and disagree. List what a pitch detector can measure—pitch name, frequency, cents, stability—and what it cannot fully judge: tone quality, rhythm, articulation, balance, phrasing, expression, posture, or musical intent.
Set up for trustworthy feedback (8 minutes)
Use this checklist:
- Choose the correct instrument so notation and transposition match the part.
- Confirm the intended clef.
- Reduce competing sound and move a reasonable distance from the microphone.
- Avoid pointing a strong air stream directly into the microphone.
- Play long enough for the reading to settle.
- Keep reference pitch at A440 unless the ensemble uses another standard.
Model one incorrect setup and ask students to diagnose the problem.
The five-part practice cycle (12 minutes)
1. Predict
Name the target note, hear it internally, and anticipate whether it tends to be sharp or flat.
2. Perform
Play with musical tone and normal technique. Do not distort the sound just to satisfy the screen.
3. Check
Look for the pitch center and pattern. Ignore the unstable instant of the attack.
4. Adjust one variable
Choose one relevant change: fingering, hand position, air speed, voicing, embouchure, bow placement, slide, peg, or vocal shape.
5. Transfer
Hide or ignore the display and repeat. The learning belongs to the student only when the improvement remains without constant visual help.
Teacher model: think aloud (5 minutes)
Demonstrate a troublesome note:
“I predict this note tends to run sharp. I’ll play first without looking. The stable center is about +18 cents. My tone is good, so I’ll test one small voicing change. The next attempt centers near +5. Now I’ll look away and see whether I can reproduce the feel.”
Students identify each stage of the cycle and the evidence used.
Practice stations (15 minutes)
Station A — Long-tone map
Measure four notes across the instrument’s comfortable range. Record a typical range, not a single instant.
Station B — Interval landing
Play a two-note interval. Predict the second note, then verify pitch name and tuning only after both notes sound.
Station C — Error finder
Choose a difficult measure. Play slowly and stop at the first pitch mismatch. Correct that transition before restarting.
Station D — Screen-off transfer
Complete three checked attempts, then three attempts without looking. Compare consistency.
Feedback-fading plan
Use the detector:
- Often when discovering an unfamiliar tendency.
- Sometimes when testing a new adjustment.
- Briefly when checking transfer.
- Rarely once the ear and body can predict the result.
This prevents dependence and keeps listening primary.
Differentiate
Beginning students: Use two comfortable notes and only correct pitch-name matching.
Developing students: Add cents and one physical adjustment.
Advanced students: Compare equal-tempered readings with harmonic ensemble tuning; document when musical context justifies a nonzero reading.
Students sensitive to visual overload: Use a partner to report only “higher,” “lower,” or “matched.”
Misconceptions to catch
- More tuner time always produces faster progress.
- Every flicker requires an adjustment.
- A correct pitch name proves good tone and rhythm.
- Starting the passage over is the best way to fix one wrong note.
- Students should watch while playing every attempt.

This lesson assesses process rather than one numerical answer. A successful student uses specific language, separates attack fluctuation from pitch center, changes one controllable variable, protects tone quality, and demonstrates at least partial transfer without the screen. If the no-look result declines, the next step is another short feedback cycle—not permanent visual dependence.
