Teacher orientation
This week asks: How can theoretical constraints generate—not suppress—musical imagination? The three meetings move from shared experience to explicit theory and then transfer. Require students to predict before measuring or labeling; use performance and explanation together as evidence.
First ideas must be preserved; theory determines one correct composition; notation software playback proves playability.
Three-meeting sequence
Proposal and materials
Plan a coherent sixteen-to-thirty-two-measure work
Improvise for two minutes using only three pitches and one rhythm.
Frame constraints as productive choices. Review project requirements: motive, two phrases, tonal plan, contrast, return, playable ranges, and analysis.
Students audition motives, choose ensemble, map form, and conference with peers using a proposal checklist.

Develop motive and phrase structure
Perform four unfinished measures and ask listeners what they expect next.
Model revision at structural, phrase, and surface levels; distinguish fixing notation from improving music.
Workshop stations address melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and instrumentation. Every student gives and receives specific evidence-based feedback.

Rehearse, revise, publish
Use functional harmony or an explained alternative
Sight-read a draft exactly as delivered and log every ambiguity.
Teach practical editing: transposition, cues, dynamics, articulations, page turns, enharmonic clarity, and part extraction.
Composer-led rehearsals alternate performance and revision; final score includes a one-page analytical note.
What did performers reveal that playback could not?

Student synthesis task
Claim–evidence–application: Students submit one notated or analytical artifact from the week, a 150–250 word explanation using at least four vocabulary terms, and a brief performance, recording, or demonstration. The explanation must identify a decision, cite musical evidence, and connect the idea to unfamiliar material.

Teacher answer guidance
1. A clear constraint or intention, performing forces, motive/material, form plan, range plan, and feasible timeline.
2. Changing large-scale material, order, proportion, harmony, or goal—not merely correcting surface notation.
3. Real performance exposes range, breathing, technique, readability, balance, and page-layout problems.
4. Award 2 points for accurate identification or construction, 2 for correct notation/terminology, 2 for evidence tied to the example, and 1 for a clear conclusion. Accept alternate solutions when the musical reasoning is defensible.
Access, differentiation, and extension
Support without lowering the target
Offer a four-part template, chord bank, and eight-measure milestone. Preteach vocabulary, model one complete think-aloud, reduce the number of simultaneous variables, and allow a second attempt after feedback.
Extension
Arrange the piece for a second ensemble with different transpositions and ranges.
Evidence to retain
Keep the exit tickets, synthesis artifact, and scored application prompt. Together they show factual fluency, transfer, and the student’s ability to explain music—not only select an answer.
